The Paralympic Games are right around the corner, starting on 7th September until 18th September.
We are excited to get behind our Australian Paralympians while they compete in Rio!
With athletes competing in 22 different sports, and para– canoe and para–triathlon being introduced for the first time, this year’s Paralympics will be great to watch!
In total, there are 160 different countries participating with more than 4350 athletes. Australia has an amazing team, are expected to place in medal positions in many of the events.
We have identified a few athletes to keep an eye on over the coming weeks!
- Dylan Alcott, former wheelchair basketball player is definitely one to watch. Securing a gold medal at age 17, Dylan is the youngest ever gold medal winner in this sport. After his Paralympics performance, he crossed to tennis and became No.1 ranked tennis player, managing to win three grand slam single titles. He will be competing in tennis this year and is vying for gold.
- For Ryley Batt, the Australian wheelchair rugby players, the Rio Games is the fourth Paralympic Games that he competed in, despite his young age of 27. At the age of 15 he was the part of national team at 2004 Athens Games, making him the youngest Paralympic rugby player in the world.
- Shaun Norris, the Australian wheelchairs basketball player, is aiming for his fourth Paralympic medal. During his debut at 2004 Athens Games, he was a part of the silver winning wheelchair basketball team. Norris received Medal of the order of Australia by winning gold at Summer Paralympics in 2008. Four years later he was part of the wheelchair basketball team that won silver medal at Summer Games.
- Angie Ballarad, wheelchair racer, who became paraplegic due to a car accident at the age of 7, is another great Australian Paralympic athlete worth a watch. 2016 Rio Games will be for Ballarad fifth Paralympic Games.
