“Age is an issue of mind of matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn't matter.” – Mark Twain

There are a lot of challenges with getting older. With every year, the tastes and abilities of you and your loved ones change and transform.

When our older loved ones start moving a little slower and need a little more help around the house, it is important to consider the options. Can your loved one ‘age in place’ or do you need to consider residency in a supportive elderly community?

Aging in place refers to the ability of elderly adults to stay in their own home for as long as reasonably possible.

At Access Rehab, we want you and your loved ones to live confidently and independently in your residence of choice for as long as you can.

By adding little home improvements, which include kitchen and bathroom daily aids, and mobility rails and supports, your loved ones can be equipped to independently stay in their home.

With products such as a dressing sticks to put your socks, and openers to undo the lids of bottles and jars, your loved ones can remain independent across their home. Kettle tippers prevent spills when making an afternoon cup of tea, and reflex knives and forks are easy to use for elderly people with wrist limitations. To move freely around the house, grab rails and stair lifts can prevent falls and give your loved one confidence to live alone and independently in their residence.

From the perspective of our loves ones, these little aids and home improvements make a great difference! Ninety precent of adults over the age of sixty-five report that they would prefer to stay in their current home as they age. For them, staying independent is a huge asset. So if they have the ability to stay, with only just a few aids, supports and equipment, then it is achievable.

However, as years go by and care needs mount, we find ourselves faced with the fact that we can't raise our families, work our jobs and run to Mum and Dad's house three times a day.

Unfortunately, the ideal of aging in place is not for everyone. However difficult it is, you may need to consider nursing homes and retirement villages as well. Nursing homes are the answer, where they can get all the attention they need.

Age doesn’t have to slow you and your loved ones down. Maintain quality of life and independence with the right supports!

To purchase useful aids and equip your loved one’s residence with the right supports and equipment, the Access Rehab team would love to discuss the options with you!
